St. Patrick’s Day - Get parade ready!

St. Patrick’s Day - Get parade ready!

St. Patrick’s Day takes place every year on the 17th of March. It is the feast day of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. The celebration began as religious feasts and ceremonies, it was later developed into a celebration of Irish culture where parades occurred after the religious traditions. This feast day is now celebrated globally.

What is the true meaning of St. Patrick’s  Day?

St. Patrick is believed to have been born in Roman Britain and was kidnapped at the age of 16 and brought to Ireland and treated as a slave. He escaped but returned to Ireland to convert Irish people to Christianity. On the 17th of March A.D. 465, he passed away. Throughout his lifetime he established monasteries, churches and schools, he also drove the snakes out of Ireland. He used a shamrock to explain the Trinity. Emigrants, particularly in the US transformed the St. Patricks’s Day tradition into the spectacular holiday it is today.

What do people do in Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day?

On St. Patrick’s Day, there are parades held in almost every town across the country. The largest parade is held in Dublin. Both those involved in the parade and those that are watching dress up in green white and gold. All ages can take part in the parade from young children playing instruments or Irish dancing, to elderly people who are part of a club or society. This day brings the community together to celebrate being Irish.
