A truly unique, handcrafted gift - The Trinity College Dublin Chess Set

Each Trinity College Dublin Chess Set is bespoke, with the board made from trees felled on the grounds of Trinity’s campus. Lovingly carved by Caulfield Country Boards in Kells Co.Meath, it is adorned with artwork from the Book of Kells.

The chess pieces have been meticulously handcrafted in Co.Westmeath by Mullingar Pewter, with each piece depicting the battle between the invading Vikings and Irish monks in the 9th century.

795 AD saw the beginning of Viking raids on the monks at Iona, where The Book of Kells is said to have originated. To safeguard relics such as The Book of Kells, fleeing monks took the sacred text with them to their sister monastery in Kells, Co. Meath in 804 AD.

This solid wood chessboard and its unique, tactile grain is sure to add charm to any home.
